My Entire Thinking Changed the Day I realised Editing is also a part of photography process.
10 years back, I always believed photography ended at the shutter click. Here is an image which is shot from Canon 600D (8-9 year old) with 18-55mm kit lens and how editing made the image from ok to brilliant.
When I sat down to edit this portrait of an elderly woman I met in a Bengaluru, Karnataka, I realised something profound: the real storytelling happens in the edit.
🛠️ What Lightroom Editing Did to This Image (Technical Breakdown)
Let’s dive into the changes made and how Adobe Lightroom brought this image to life:
1. White Balance & Color Correction
Before: The image had a strong orange/magenta cast due to poor ambient lighting and camera auto white balance.
After: White balance was corrected manually using the eyedropper tool on a neutral tone (the whites in her saree). This neutralized skin tones and restored natural color to her attire.
2. Exposure & Contrast
Before: Underexposed with very little contrast. Flat shadows made the subject blend with the background.
After:
Increased overall Exposure slightly.
Highlights reduced to recover details in the bright orange cloth.
Shadows lifted to bring out facial features.
Contrast and Clarity added to give depth.
3. Texture & Detail
Texture and Clarity: Increased subtly to enhance the fine lines and wrinkles, telling the story of her life.
Sharpening: Targeted sharpening was applied to her eyes, bringing sharpness and life to her expression.
Noise Reduction: Applied minimal luminance noise reduction to maintain details while reducing grain in shadows.
4. Color Grading
HSL Panel Adjustments:
Saturation of reds and oranges slightly boosted to enhance her headscarf.
Desaturated distracting background colors.
Split Toning / Color Grading:
Warm shadows, cool highlights — adding cinematic mood and focus on the subject.
5. Background Blur (Subject Separation)
Applied masking with a radial filter to blur and darken the background.
This separated the subject from the cluttered street, drawing the viewer’s attention directly to her face.
💡 Why Editing Is Not Cheating — It’s Storytelling
This image was never about just clicking the shutter—it was about telling her story with intention.
Without editing:You see a woman.
With editing:
You feel her emotion, her strength, and her depth
🚀 Final Words
Editing isn’t a luxury—it’s your voice as a photographer. This transformation isn’t about altering reality, but about amplifying the truth that’s already there.
If you’re someone who’s just beginning or stuck at “click and save,” it’s time to move beyond. Learn the craft of editing, and your vision will never be the same.
This image changed how I saw post-processing—and maybe it will for you too.
